    Christmas Holiday

         更新了相册,因为在报纸上看到了skywalk的报道,而skywalk又使我想到了另一个在峡谷中的结构,由林同炎先生设计的曲线斜拉桥。放上悉尼歌剧院的照片是因为在Arup的电话面试时被问到了“Could you please tell us which is your favorite structure?”当时的脑中一片空白,然后突然想到了悉尼歌剧院……细细想想觉得她真得很美,而且说不清楚。把Walt Disney Concert Hall放上来也是为了衬托她,虽然老美的音乐厅的确很fancy,但是总觉得有些太张扬,甚至觉得有些gaudy.
         其实当初被Arup问到的时候我也想过要说某座桥梁,因为目前正在没头没脑的做关于桥的project,但是一是自己对桥梁所知下有限,二是当时不知道林同炎先生所设计的桥梁叫什么名字,所以没有说,后来想了想,发现答案也可以是“自己设计自己喜欢的结构”,比如跨越白令海峡连接北美洲和亚洲大陆的大桥以及跨越直布罗陀海峡连接非洲与欧洲的大桥。其实,林同炎先生在生前早就想修跨越白令海峡的大桥,但是由于种种原因未能如愿。之后我意识到这是我在放弃了初中时想得Nobel Prize的梦想之后新找到的梦想 (觉得比第一个梦想要现实一些,虽然还是不怎么现实),梦想意味着烦恼当然也可能是幸福。总之,想到什么就写下来,写下来后就去做,做完之后进行总结。现在做的是第一步,至于能做几步就是走一步算一步了。
         这两天离开学校,在丁丁哥哥家过着休养生息的悠闲假期,丁丁哥哥家离纽约很近,所以圣诞节的时候又去了趟曼哈顿,到洛克菲勒中心看了“缘分天注定”(Serendipity)中的那颗大圣诞树。Thornton Tomasetti的面试也没有去,因为面试是在12月27日,还要我自己负担所需费用,我就让他们改成电话面试,估计这就让他们很不爽,而我的手机又正好在等电话的那天没了信号……虽然我及时发邮件告诉他们固话号码,可是没收到任何回复,呵呵……其实,归根结底还是自己不想去,虽然Thornton Tomasetti很有名(台北101是他们设计的)。Arup说在holiday之后给我回复,不知道他们说的是Christmas还是New Year,不过我现在几乎是吃了秤砣铁了心的想读博,哈。
         明天回Cornell,又要开始干活了,要抓紧时间堕落一个^___^

    纽约 印象

        启程
        12月16日早上9点,我,侃侃,Rachel和Dustin四个人在College Town Beagles门口集合,搭乘ShortLine去纽约,原本计划要去Boston,但是考虑到路上的时间和游览时间的比例,还是决定去NYC。这是我到美国后第一次离开Cornell,离开Ithaca。美国的长途bus并不像新东方张雷冬老师所说的很宽敞,也并不是每辆长途车都有闭路电视,至少ShortLine如是,Greyhound的情况怎样就不得而知了。路上的行程很平静,也可以说很无聊,从Ithaca到NYC的公路两旁除了山野还是山野,偶尔会有Motel,加油站或者麦当劳,总之就是没什么人。下午三点左右,我们到了纽约。
        Lincoln Tunnel
        我们的bus路线是先要绕道到New Jersy,然后在进NYC,所以就必须经过Hudson River下的Lincoln Tunnel,之所以提到这个Tunnel有以下几点原因,第一,是专业原因;第二,是地点原因;第三,是最主要的原因,Lincoln Tunnel就像是连接不同空间的蠕虫洞,在New Jersy这边进隧道时,还是Suburb的感觉;出了隧道,却突然发现自己已经身处纽约的曼哈顿区……
        Transportation System
        下了车,第一个感觉就是,这个车站很破旧,等到进了地铁之后,才发现,地铁更破旧,给人的感觉相当的局促与压抑,一时想不起来到底地铁站想什么,后来才发现,原来是像煤矿的矿井(这样说虽然有些夸张),地铁列车也相当的破旧,进站时车轮与铁轨的摩擦声尖锐的就像要刺破你的耳膜。但是不得不承认纽约的地铁系统相当的发达,是十分便利的交通工具。
        Empire State Building
        落脚的地方在42 Street,离联合国总部不远。从旅馆出来,大家决定去Empire State Building,因为她太有名了,虽然曾经被世贸双塔遮住了光辉,但是在911之后,她又成为曼哈顿的制高点。上到86层的过程很繁琐,要经过安检,电梯的速度是我目前感受过的最快的电梯,登上大厦的顶端的时候,正值日落,景色很美,我们一直在上面待到天全黑下来,放眼望去,黑夜与霓虹掩盖了拥挤肮脏,呈现出一片前所未有的繁华。也许纽约的美只有站在帝国大厦上,临高俯瞰时才能体会……
        Time Square and Broadway Show
        从帝国大厦下来,就赶往Broadway,Rachel定了票,Phantom of the Opera,相当老的歌舞剧,在百老汇大概上演了20年,但是还是有像我们这样的人慕名而来,剧场仍旧是座无虚席。表演十分精彩,在有限的舞台空间上,把表现力发挥到极致。走在百老汇的街道少,可以想象在电影诞生,甚至是在有声电影诞生之前,百老汇是如何的繁华……
        Central Park
        从百老汇出来,大家在时代广场闲逛,因为才10点,大家都不想回hotel,Dustin提议去Central Park,众人一致响应。晚上的Central Park漆黑一片,只有周边的地方被路灯照亮。碰到一个老美,滔滔不绝的向我们介绍,Central Park的周围都是纽约富人们的高层高档住宅,我当时突然很同情这些人,在纽约,尤其是曼哈顿这种寸土寸金的地方,有这么一块比巴掌大一些的绿地,是很宝贵的,就好像“未来水世界”里面的土壤和淡水一样,不像在Ithaca,经常可以见到鹿。所以Central Park是财富的象征。
        Fifth Avenue
        Fifth Avenue出名的原因即使在半夜十二点,店铺都关门之后也可以看得出来,路两旁的橱窗设计的十分的精美,别具一格,我照了好多的照片,可是回来后却不想去整理,细思原因,大概是因为太零散的缘故,找不到主题和线索,只是一张张美丽的图片,不能讲述什么东西……
        Metropolitan Museum
        与大英博物馆齐名的博物馆,给我的感觉就是一个字,大。我们花了一个下午的时间,走马观花的看才只能看的四分之一展区。没有固定的门票票价,你想付多少就付多少,我付了5美元。当时觉得这个制度还是不错的,比如Bright经常来,所以他只象征性的付了1美元。后来进馆看到展品才发现,大多数并不是价值连城的东西,而且很多拓本和赝品。这当然是可以理解的,就好比你有一颗100克拉的钻石,你会把它做成首饰,天天佩戴招摇过市吗?更何况大多数的东西都不是你自己的……
        China Town
        中国人多,有时是一件很爽的事,也许在国内感觉不到,因为大家都一样,但是出来以后才发现,中国的13亿人口,占世界人口的1/5到1/4是一个多么可怕的比例,而且这个数字并没有包括全世界的华裔,思扬就常说,在加拿大的多伦多和温哥华,一个人完全可以只说中文生活,在纽约的China Town就是,你可以用中文问路,纽约地铁的自动售票机也有中文的选项,真的有时觉得人多也不是坏事。
        Brooklyn Bridge
        离开China Town,赶往Brooklyn Bridge,突然想上厕所,由于Rachel说地铁的厕所不是一般的脏,我们就决定出去找。这个决定导致了我们4人在之后将近一个小时的时间内都在找厕所,由于是十点之后,又离Time Square比较远,店铺大多都关门了,历尽千辛万苦,最终被麦当劳救了,于是我请大家吃甜筒作为向麦当劳借厕所的报答,后来就很同意思扬的麦当劳就是流浪者之家的说法。
        从曼哈顿一侧上桥,从布鲁克林一侧下桥,已经是凌晨2点半了,在进到地铁站之前并没有感到布鲁克林的恐怖,进了地铁之后才发现,布鲁克林的地铁比其他地方的地铁还要破,售票处的员工很好心的给我们推荐回去的路线,看上去有点绕远,但是我们也不好意思拒绝他的好意,他大概也看出我们觉得远,于是强调说,主要是出于安全考虑,而且那条路线的车次也比较多。进到地铁站后发现,几乎没有什么人,只有一两个面目很彪悍的黑人在转来转去,当时唯一的想法是赶紧坐上地铁逃回曼哈顿……
        尾声    
       14号到16号,两个晚上,一个上午,一个下午,我并不喜欢我所看到的纽约,当然也可以理解,大量人口的聚集,城市年龄也很大,高耸的建筑,狭窄的街道,污浊的空气,匆匆的行人,贫富悬殊……一切的一切我只是个旁观者。
       有机会的话打算多转转美国东西海岸的城市……

        因为期末考试的缘故,好久没上blog,早上起床打开电脑,第一件事就是浏览朋友的blog,于是知到了泊生哥哥在“吉祥天女节”被女学生敲诈(窃笑),不过12月25号就放寒假,还是两个月,admire to death;知道了姐在吃甜食(“华丽血时代”看完了吗?是不是因为忙没时间看了);知道了“猥琐”穿中山装还是满帅的,那张合影很是不错,还有,你旁边搂着的,那个头发快到眼睛的,娘娘腔不会是聂聪吧……,很怀念129,校园歌手大赛(后悔自己开始去听时已经是大三了),还有就是大家又被涂脂抹粉了,想起毕联一段不堪回首的往事……(呵呵);知道了老郭上纲上限的实力,我的一句无意的话都能让他给演绎成那个样子,我服的无话可说,不过老郭现在的思维能力是比我强好多,tnnd;张Carcy的blog还是平淡中的深刻感悟。于是我决定了,继续写我的流水帐式blog。
        回到整题,嗯,那就是我放假了,其实还有一个课程大作业,不过就像Damian所说的,我绝对同意的观点,放假是一种心情,no more stress,哈哈。不爽的是我的假期后半段要开始干活,这样只有20天左右的假期,sigh。Arup那老小子,把20号的on site面试改成了电话面试,因为不想负担我的旅费,咬牙切齿……不过我打算最近几天去Boston,看看Havard和MIT,呵呵……今年寒假这边中国的朋友们很多都回国,Stanley回去学做饭;石超,我昨天给他打电话时,已经人在三藩,说是参加个会议,然后从那里直接回国;思扬着两天还有考试,18号回国见在英国读书的老婆……所以我决定,圣诞节的时候去New York City,去找我要的“灯红酒绿”……
        总的感觉是:有朋友真好,呵呵
